[i'll never let you sweep me off my feet.]
MY INFORMATION'S JUST NOT GOING IN.
Dan was watching Ben closely. His teeth were clenched, and she looked almost angry. Dan's first thought was that Ben was having problems with his magic. Then it happened. Thunder clapped and lightening flashed. Dan turned towards the doorway he just walked in from. The light sprinkle quickly transformed into a torrent. Rain pounded the ground in sheets. Dan kept the water from splashing inside. The booms of thunder were only slightly muffled by the hammering of the rain. The sky quickly became dark. The only light in the church came from the brief flashes of lightening. Dan's face lit up with pure delight. He watched as the rain cascaded through the air; the drops as large as his curled up index finger now. He inhaled the scent of charged ozone. The smell was masked by the smell of the wet earth.
His nearly euphoric phase ended quickly. His face fell just a tad. He realized he was envious of Ben. All his life he had been practicing and studying water magic to be able to create storms. To create a way to call upon water at will. Ben had the ability to do so. But he was still fascinated by the boy's powers.
Dan put on a smile. He turned to face Ben. His smile immediately fell. The expression on Ben's face was odd. He couldn't exactly place what it was. It was almost as if he had a secret or something. His eyes still held a small spark of anger. Guilt swept through Dan's body. Ben had just been explaining to Dan how his power worked. He almost sounded like...a slave to Dan. A slave to his own power combined with the command of other people. The envy he felt for Ben was replaced by a feeling not far from pity.
"Hey, uh, look, sorry for having you do that. I was just wondering if you could, you know, make it rain. It's kind of always been a dream of mine." Dan finished quietly with a little laugh.
AND TELL ME NOW I'M MUCH TOO PROUD.
